Building Social Value

As part of our focus on people, communities and the environment we have developed a new strategy for a sustainable business – ‘responsible business, positive outcomes’. This gives each division responsibility for its own sustainability programme, in close alignment with the Group strategy. Being a responsible business means we also have to be ethical, conducting our business operations and services with the highest integrity and ensuring that all our supply chain partners do the same. Acting ethically, particularly in dealing with our clients, their customers and our own employees, remains a core part of how we do business globally.

Our social responsibility begins at home with our own people, and operating a safe and sustainable business is always our top priority. We are also committed to helping them reach their full potential, which is reflected in the 50% rise in vocational qualifications achieved and through the 20% increase we’ve delivered in apprenticeship numbers. We have also helped to found the Supply Chain Sustainability School, which helps suppliers and subcontractors gain the knowledge and skills to deliver exemplary environmental and social performance to our clients. Nearly 3,000 of Kier’s preferred suppliers and subcontractors have signed up to the School.

At Kier we respect the environment – we are working to improve our resource efficiency, prioritising a reduction in waste and carbon emissions. This reduces negative environmental impacts, helps to manage costs, and creates shared value for Kier, our clients and the communities in which we operate. Last year we:

  • Reduced the amount of carbon dioxide we produce for every pound of revenue by 2%, a sign of improving efficiency and reduced fuel usage
  • Diverted more waste from landfill.

The Kier Foundation is an independently registered charity, which supports both Kier’s charity partner, and other charitable causes close to the hearts of our employees and the communities our businesses operate in. In its first four years of operation, The Kier Foundation gave over £520,000 in donations and supported 190 charitable causes.
